The course will be taking place on Friday August 26th in central London, and will run from approximately 10 a.m. to around 5 pm. The course will be aimed at new LaTeX users, with an emphasis on hands-on experience. The course will take place on user’s own laptops: remember to bring one along on the day!

The course fee and (for non-members) a copy of the membership form should then be sent to Joseph Wright, UK-TUG Secretary. Payment should be sent within two weeks of making a provisional booking, otherwise the space may be released. We will also hold a ‘reserve’ list of names if the course reaches capacity: experience suggests that the course will book up very rapidly.

The UK-TUG beginners’ LaTeX course continues to be popular. Each time it is presented, there are minor adjustments to be made to the material. This is a collaborative process, and UK-TUG is keen that other people can benefit from and contribute to our work. The most current version of the material used for the course has therefore been made available on GitHub. Feel free to use the material, make suggestions or indeed volunteer to help run courses!

Yesterday’s LaTeX beginners course was well-attended: 22 students came for the full-day of experience with LaTeX. The course was led by four volunteers from UK-TUG, and this seemed to work very well. For those people who could not make it, the slides and handouts are available in PDF format, or you can download the LaTeX source for both.

We’ll be looking at the possibility of running a similar course again later in the year. There is already a waiting list for information, so if you are interested please do drop the committee a line.

  • Creating basic documents
  • Logic structure in LaTeX documents
  • Including graphical material
  • Bibliographies
  • LaTeX Q&A

The course will be taking place on Friday April 15th in central Cambridge, and will run from approximately 10 a.m. to around 4:30 pm. The course will be aimed at new LaTeX users, with an emphasis on hands-on experience. We will be using a computer lab equipped with Windows PCs, but there will the opportunity to set up your system to use LaTeX. More details about the full programme for the day will be circulated to participants nearer to the course date.

The course material is intended as a general introduction to using LaTeX. However, it is useful to have some idea about the interests of those attending, as this enables us to prepare for at least some of the potential questions. A brief outline of your background is therefore encouraged along with your booking. It is also useful to know what operating system you usually use, as this is useful when preparing instructions on how to set up LaTeX for your own systems.

The training course ‘Using LaTeX to write a thesis’ took place today, led by Nicola Talbot and Joseph Wright at UEA London. Just over twenty people made it to the day, and there was a good mix of people. Planning for the next presentation will begin soon, as there were many more people wanting to attend than places available.

The notes for the course are available in PDF format here. You can also download the source for the slides, tutor notes and examples used on the day.

The recently advertised training course on LaTeX has proved to be very popular indeed, to the point where all of the spaces are already taken! We are starting a list of interested people in case anyone drops out, and will be looking at holding another course later in the year if there is the interest. So do consider sending a registration e-mail: the more people we know are interested the more likely it is that another course can be organised.

Many people need to use LaTeX to write reports, papers and so on, but find getting started with LaTeX challenging. The UK TeX Users’ Group (UK-TUG) and the University of East Anglia (UEA) are please to announce a training course to help new users get started with LaTeX. The course will be focussed on the needs of new users, using the example of writing a thesis as a typical requirement for the inexperienced LaTeX user.

The training course will take place on the 30th of July at UEA’s facilities in central London (http://www.uea.ac.uk/london/about/londonlocation). The course venue is just a few minutes walk from Liverpool Street Station in the heart of the City of London.

Programme

The course will cover a broad range of topics for new users. The outline programme is

10:00 Refreshments
10:30 What is LaTeX, and what is TeX?
10:45 Installing LaTeX
11:15 Creating a simple document
11:45 Document classes
12:30 Lunch
13:30 Document structure
14:30 Graphics
15:00 BibTeX
15:30 Refreshments
16:00 Q & A session

Depending on the particular interests of participants, the exact details of the material to be presented may be modified.

The course will be presented by Nicola Talbot and Joseph Wright, who are both very experienced LaTeX users and prominent in the UK LaTeX community.

Requirements

No previous LaTeX experience is needed to attend the course, as we will start with an introduction to TeX and LaTeX.

If possible, please bring your own laptop to the course. Part of the course content is setting up LaTeX on your own system, with help from the course leaders. If you can’t bring a laptop, let us know when you register and we will sort out a working system.

LaTeX is available across different platforms, and so the course will be accessible to Windows, Mac and Linux users.

Registration

The cost of the course is being subsidised by UK-TUG, and so the fee for attending the course will be only £10. This will include:

  • The course itself
  • One year’s membership of UK-TUG
  • A TeX Live 2009 DVD, which provides a full TeX system
  • Refreshments during the course

The fee can be paid on the day of the course, but registration is essential as places are limited.  Please e-mail Joseph Wright <joseph.wright@morningstar2.co.uk> to register. Please include:

  • Details of your LaTeX experience, if any
  • Whether you will be bringing your own laptop to the course
  • The general subject area you are working in (to allow planning of the course content)
  • Any special requirements (diet, access, etc.)

As part of the efforts by UK-TUG to support TeX users in the United Kingdom, we have established a ‘Training Network’ of people with TeX training experience. We’d encourage prospective trainees and others involved in TeX training to make contact.
